After reflecting on his memorial service I am convinced Casey is an inspiring example of the effectiveness of the 12 step program in altering the lives of the person following the steps and the lives of those around them.  Casey’s sister Gail shared some of the details of a brain injury Casey sustained in an automobile accident many years ago.  Gail said the injury affected the part of the brain that could distinguish right from wrong.  I did not know Casey prior to his injury but I have observed him up front and personal for almost a dozen years.  There is no doubt that during that period of time Casey not only knew the difference between right and wrong, he lived a life that showed his commitment to God, his family and his very human brothers and sisters.

Casey was the Senior Resident at American House Sober Living Apartments for almost half of the 23 years he was in recovery.  I got to know Casey very well during that time.  Casey was not a saint but he lived the principals a program of spiritual action.  He studied and knew the text of the “big book” but more important he applied the spiritual principles to his daily life.  A few years back one of our brothers took a big tumble after 3 years of sobriety, and Casey stepped and spent literally hundreds of hours working with that man, taking him to at least one and sometimes 2 meeting a day a month.  This is simply one example of the dozens of people Casey reached out to in love and service.

I want Gail and the rest of his family to know that Casey not only learned to know right from wrong, he lived a life that in recovery we call “walking the talk”

Casey will be greatly missed.  Well done, good and faithful servant.

Casey, you were a very bright spot in my life. In just the few years I knew you I came to love you. Seeing you each week at the men's meeting. Having dinner together. Meeting the newcomers you always brought was a real joy. After I moved away, you stayed in contact with me through emails. You have no idea how much that helped me. Running into you at the Serenity in Yosemite in 05 was a treat too. You had the greatest sense of humor, sick and twisted. Something I could always relate to.

You touched my life in the way only another real alcoholic can. I will never forget you. By the way, save me a seat up there.

My best friend and one of the greatest, courageous, sincere men that I had ever know. He never left me in the 13 years I knew Casey.  Even after I left Stockton and moved to Sacramento, Casey was the one constant I could always count on.  We talked twice a month and he came to visit me last Summer. He kept the book and the life inside of me going when I fell.  GOD took home the best of all angels when he called him home.  I will be forever grateful for the opportunity of having Casey as my dear friend and will miss him terribly.
